It struck me as shocking when my third grade teacher had to pull me aside during a test on multiplication tables. I immediately felt panic course through my veins; I assumed that I was about to be accused of cheating or that I had broken some other rule.

Besides interpreting my own emotions, music has taught me how to empathize with others, because as I’ve gotten older, music has required me to attempt to understand different cultures and different people.

In this way, people that are literate in music learn how to perceive the world around them differently.

In the future, I would like to spend more time connecting paragraphs seamlessly with fluid transitions. While the conventionally accepted definitions of literacy are, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “the ability to read and write; knowledge that relates to a specified topic,” literacy in a subject is often more complex than knowledge base, and to be literate in a topic often requires more than just comprehension. All of these types of people learn about life through music, whether they use music as a teaching tool or inadvertently gain knowledge from music; because of the benefits of literacy in music, music should be taught to kids from a young age.

I read a wonderful essay today by Joe Oestreich entitled “Writing in the Major Key” and it got me thinking: Writing—creative nonfiction, fiction, and certainly poetry—is more like writing music than I had ever imagined. For the most part, gatekeepers to these goals remain. Major key writers, he continues, don’t necessarily hold the same weight in the literary world even tough there is as much happiness, one would argue, as there is sadness in the world. But here’s the thing to consider: Should you be writing to what editors As writers, we all want to be read and published.
