In May 2017 I purchased a one-way ticket on United's basic-economy tier.

During the purchasing and travel process I learned an important lesson about paying attention to pricing and budgeting when it comes to airfare.

Thanks to shrewd planning and a watchful eye, I’ve dodged landmines and avoided most calamities in the post-merger world of United Airlines. Turns out there were no seats to assign–when I checked in online a boarding pass was generated that said “See Agent”. And note the electronic boarding pass does not even mention first class– When all this transpired yesterday afternoon, I knew exactly what was going on.

I’m flying from Newark to Los Angeles this morning and applied a regional premier upgrade (RPU) to the reservation in order to secure a first class seat–forget about a complimentary upgrade on this route.

ME: Can you take a look at this record please * * * * * *?

[tapping away] They’ll have to give you your seat at the airport. I found a reasonable nonstop direct flight for 8 on United's basic-economy ticket tier.I thought I had just won the lottery — until the email confirmations for my purchase came.Since getting to and from Austin can involve layovers on nondirect flights from New York, I was enticed by the nonstop flights scheduled from Newark International Airport, in nearby New Jersey, an airport that happens to be one of United's big hubs. After searching my go-to airlines — Southwest, on which I flew out to Austin from Newark, and American — I begrudgingly went to the website of United, an airline I hadn't flown since 2014. Also, there were no other viable first class options–I checked. * * * Part of the reason I left the reservation untouched is because I want to be on the flight–it gets into LA at a good time, allowing me to avoid rush hour traffic. On those airlines, the price per seat varies by aircraft, route, and demand for seats.CNBC found that a customer looking for a preferred seat on a Delta flight from New York City to Los Angeles in early January would have to pay an extra for the seat. While United's policy and pricing around which flights offer basic-economy tickets has since been adjusted — making sure you know what you're purchasing and considering all aspects of your travel is an important step when purchasing airline tickets.United Airlines began rolling out its basic-economy ticket — which has a number of limitations such as a no-carry-on-bag policy — in early 2017.

We flew Economy-Minus recently and used my Explorer-card status to pay for aisle seat assignments ahead of time -- and yes, I would have been quite vocal about being reassigned.
