As a student or academic, you might produce a literature review as a standalone paper or as a portion of a larger research project. Literature reviews do more than list the sources you’ve consulted: they summarize and critically evaluate those sources. Unlike some of the other well-known "reviews" ( or book reviews), literature reviews steer clear of opinion statements.

Writing a literature review is a time-consuming process that requires extensive research and critical analysis.

So, why should you spend so much time reviewing and writing about research that’s already been published?

A literature review summarizes and synthesizes the existing scholarly research on a particular topic.

It pulls the previous research together, and explains how it connects to the research proposed by the current paper.
