We are a world class department that combines critical and creative excellence.

The Ph D in Creative Writing usually takes the form of a major creative project ('a book length work' of up to 80,000 words) in the student’s chosen literary form, plus a critical/reflective thesis of 20,000 words.

Increasingly, students are embarking on Ph Ds that synthesise creative and critical elements and with this in mind, variations on the basic 80/20 ratio can be negotiated, depending on available supervisors.

We warmly welcome you to the subject of Creative Writing.

You will be joining a vibrant and lively community of readers and writers, learning your craft from experienced practising authors and sharing your ideas through critique of your work and others.
