School Violence Victoria Griffin Fayetteville State University The Importance to Be Aware Of School Violence in Education Today By Victoria Griffin December 1, 2014 Abstract: The importance of knowing about school violence, the cause of school violence, forms of school violence and they ways teacher can prevent school violence was observed.
These steps include: use of `less violent' materials, peer mediation interventions, police presence and action, individualizing of the troublemaker(s), safety measures [in schools, and at home], and raising deviancy awareness.
Through using these methods, hopefully we can start to stem the amount of, and types of violence that has been ruling the schoolyards these days.
Some school districts are also now introducing mandatory peer mediation whenever a conflict arises, hopefully preventing any further violence. The problem with criminal behavior in the schools has come to the forefront of national media attention and governmental concerns.
Now, more than ever, the national focus is on the education systems, reforms, and safety of the children.
The National Center for Education Statistics released its annual “Indicators of School Crime and Safety report during the most recent data available indict that there were 31 violent deaths such as homicides and suicides involving students, staff members and others on school campuses” (Addressing School Violence).
This statistic was a decrease from early school years. There are also secondary goals that are being reached. There are liberal and conservative solutions to the problem. These include anger management and classes in conflict resolution, hopefully allowing students to work out problems, instead of bringing them to light with violence. Each offers its own solution, and each thinks that the other will not work. Many factors play a role in a student’s growth and development, including external and internal factors. The condition of a child’s environment is an important aspect of how he progresses. There has also been an increase in the decision to modify education to help stem the violence in schools. The liberal view focuses mainly on the social conditions, economic conditions, and strategies to fix them to prevent violence. The introduction of `less violent' education material is one step in the process. The conservative viewpoint, on the other hand, considers the lack of order inherent in the school systems, and the loss of authority amongst school leaders to be the problem.Although fatal school violence has decrease over the year’s nonfatal incidents at schools have been on the rise these acts include victims of theft, bullying, and being threatened or physically injured by a student at their school.School violence is an educational issue that needs to be addressed but to address the issues you must try to understand the root of the problem. The institution of new programs, increased awareness of already viable problems, and the fixing of these problems will lead to a safer classroom for the youth of tomorrow. There has been a huge debate about is school violence increasing or decreasing.
