An exploratory and descriptive approach was used to describe how critical thinking of learners can be facilitated in clinical nursing education.

Since critical thinking can not be facilitated in a vacuum, the author used the theoretical framework of critical thinking identified by critical thinking experts in a Delphi study (Facione, 1990:6, 13) within the nursing process framework (Wilkinson, 19) and other relevant literature to demonstrate how critical thinking can be facilitated were used.

Critical thinking is a part of the nursing process which adheres to a deep commitment to maintain intellectual discipline, as well as formulating decisions based on sound judgments and logical conclusions.

Critical thinking will result in excellent clinical outcomes and patient safety.

The nurse gathers a lot of data or information regarding a patient and guides the nursing care of the patient based on observations as well as interactions.

Empathetic listening will assist the nurse in determining priorities for patient care in collaboration with the patient to achieve desired patient goals. Her articles have appeared in many magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times and Newsday.
