The master’s was a total waste of time, the undergrad degree nearly so.(I much later earned a doctorate in rhetorical analysis with specialties in composition theory and indigenous cognition, which was not a waste of time.)I have been teaching for 44 years, including 35 as a professor. Business, pre-law (and then law school), science, engineering — they all have great subject matter. Btw, I used to be one of those 5% who made a living writing science fiction and fantasy. So does history, but then you would also relegate yourself to poverty, unless you want to teach high school and coach athletics. But only take classes from professors who have professional publications, not just publications in minor literary journals. But I got tired of being alone in a room all the time, with no one to talk to except myself (and I find myself extremely boring). First Year Students will also choose from a wide range of specialist English modules such as Making Shakespeare, Gender and Sexuality in the 18th Century, Austen’s Peers, Yeats, Reading Ulysses, Reading Beckett, The Theatre of Martin Mc Donagh.

“Studying English with Creative Writing has allowed me to take something I love and incorporate it directly into my degree.

The hardest part about writing is often finding the time to do it.

Creative Writing graduates work across a wide variety of jobs including: writers, editors, publishers, literary agents, literary event support, literary critics, digital content writers and advertising copywriters.

Many also enter other professions including: You will study the work of a wide range of writers, focusing on how they create their works. You will explore a range of narrating voices by reading texts selected to illustrate this range.

In the final year, you will work on – and complete to high standard – a substantial writing project.

To help you reach this standard, you will be advised and directed by one of the supervisors on the Creative Writing team.

Students will also partake in advanced Creative Writing Workshops.

Students will have access to both EU and non-EU destinations through a suite of programmes, including Erasmus, Erasmus and the study abroad and partnership arrangements that UCD has with universities across the globe.

The status of Iowa City as a UNESCO City of Literature has also enriched the writing community, with people from across the Midwest visiting the town during the annual Book Festival.

The new massive open online courses (MOOCs) offered by the Department of English, “Every Atom: Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself,” and by the International Writing Program’s series “How Writers Write” have enrolled thousands of students and adult learners, enhancing the reputation of Iowa as the Writing University.
