Early on, Kellogg decided to interview every applicant because it did not have the brand cachet of Harvard, Stanford, or Wharton to entice the top applicants, so it needed to look for “diamonds in the rough”—those candidates who would be overlooked by other MBA programs based on their written applications but who would be very attractive to corporate recruiters.

As a result, the school admitted candidates who had much stronger “soft skills” such as teamwork and creative problem-solving abilities.
