Pride and Prejudice Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding is about a single woman over 30, who smokes too much, drinks too much, and has a tendency to say whatever comes into her mind. Interestingly enough this is instead the beginning of their wonderful love story.

She asks herself: can she find her place in the world, and a man? Bridget Jones’s Diary was written by Helen Fielding in 1996.

This is portrayed in the novel, with by the opening sentence, "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in need of a wife". A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. " This clearly shows the need for a woman to be married at a young age in society at that time.

Moreover, it is further portrayed by the first section of dialogue, between that of Elizabeth's mother and father concerning the arrival of a particularly wealthy bachelor in the neighborhood, not far from the Bennet's family home. In the film, Bridget Jones' Diary, the importance of marriage is conveyed in the opening scene by Bridget's karaoke attempt of "All by myself", the title and lyrics of the song revealing Bridget's desire for a husband.

However, there are probably more differences than similarities between the two books.

You can definitely see that Bridget Jones Diary takes place almost two centuries after Pride and Prejudice since the language, the setting and the theme differ quite a lot from Pride and Prejudice.“If I can but see one of my daughters happily settled at Netherfield and all the others equally well married I shall have nothing to wish for.” During the early 19th century, the culture in society strongly opposed women having a job. Therefore, women had to marry in order to get money and to live a decent life. For instance, in Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth has to get a husband in order to be able to own anything at all.As a matter of fact her mother’s biggest wish is for her daughters to get married.Apart from obvious changes such as language and dress code, there are five correlating themes between Bridget Jones' Diary and Pride and Prejudice; marriage, the similarities between characters, and attitudes towards women. One of the first issues made obvious early in both Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones' Diary is that of the importance of marriage. Bennet's response, "Oh, single, my dear, to be sure!A good example of Mark's awkwardness is when he says "I. Bennet raises her five daughters Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty and Lydia, - with the purpose of getting them married to rich husbands that can support the family. However, Bridget Jones Diary is sometimes regarded as a modern interpretation of Pride and Prejudice, especially seen through the plot and characters. They are not from the upper class, and their house in Hertfordshire will be inherited by a distant cousin if Mr. The girls in both books have to get a husband, but for totally different reasons. However, in Bridget Jones’s era, as well as in ours, a woman can get a job and make a living by herself.Money is therefore not such a huge deal, although it still matters.
